At 5.4kgs I suspect this would make a good climbing bike

At a shade under £10k, it does somewhat blow the budget out of the water

Aye, but the Emonda line in general is probably a good shout! I love mine and though the wheels arent "boutique", they're light enough and can take a pounding. (Manchester roads have seen me with a reasonable amount of proof of that!)

Comes in at about 6.8kg with SRAM RED, I imagine there'd be a couple hundred grams difference with Ultegra. Have a poo before you ride innit.

After a summer best lightweight climbing bike.
Try to find an ultegra spec ( including chainset ) carbon framed.
Originally looked at £1500 mark at shimano 105 level but pushing the budget to ultegra.
Open to ideas but so far have looked a n Orbea orca m20 but comes with average wheels and a ribble custom build. I guess you're punished for having a big brand frame at this price point as I keep coming across mixed groupsets and cheap wheels?

What you got ?
Picked my Ghost up for £1500 few months ago, Ultegra/ Ksryium disc not mega light but non discs versions are....they seem to have gone at cheapo price?

Not even that if the rider does not have climbing legs. The bike will not go up the hill if the rider cannot make it. I know this because I am crap on hills. Its why I have a 750cc motorbike.

Two options for you:
Canyon Ultimate CF SL 9.0 - full Ultegra, Mavic Ksyrium wheels/Yksion tyres, 7.1kg, £1,849
Canyon Ultimate CF SL 7.0 - full 105, Mavic Aksium wheels/Conti GP4000 tyres, 7.6kg, £1,349

Identical frame, with components that you probably won't be able to tell the difference between in use. So effectively you're choosing to save £500 or save 500g.

look at a good used Scott Addict .... these are regarded by many as one of the finest/best climbing bikes

here's some examples ....

a brand new one on ebay for £1350 (not sure if it's your size though) ... Scott Addict 30

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Scott-Add...855411?hash=item2a75418833:g:ypIAAOSwal5YLD-L

and here's a used one for cheaper, but it has ultegra groupset and upgraded wheels:

edit .... this 2nd one looks a bit knackered but there are loads on ebay

There is no particular reason why any bike should be 'one of the finest climbing bikes' either. It is no better or worse than any other. Riders make the best climbers - not bikes. I'm sure there are as many people arguing that the Spec Tarmac, Canyon SLX or the Pina F8 are all equally as good.

I was merely giving a suggestion to the OP based on what I have read from people who actually own the Scott Addict .... I've never owned one and most probably will never buy one ...

it's true that the rider makes the best climber, but with a bike that is suited for climbing, it becomes a lot easier ....

of my 3 bikes, my Giant TCR is the better climber (faster than my Specialized S-Works Transition, and a lot has to do with the geometry especially when I stand and peddle when coming to the peaks of the hills ... (they weigh pretty much the same) ....

on the flats, with the same wind conditions, they are similar in speed

My next bike will most probably be a Scott Foil with Di2 which will replace my Giant TCR .... not regarded as a fast bike for hills as it's heavier and is an aero bike, but I'm hoping that I will be able to cycle a couple of km/hr faster especially on the flats

but take my Surly Long Haul Trucker for a ride on steep hills .... it has 26 inch wheels and weighs a lot .... then tell me that a bike does not make a difference

Thank you everyone for your replies , I didn't realise I would cause such a debate .

pleasure ....

it's always good to listen to what everyone says, then make up your own mind. Buying a bike is like buying a car .... everyone has their own 'favourite'

Sometimes though, an extra bit of research also helps:

did I spot a Scott Addict in that video?
