Piffle. How exactly does one 'develop the feel'? Precisely how many carbon steerers have you crushed joe?

One develops 'the feel' when one becomes experienced enough to develop it. I do not put myself in that catagory.

how easy is it to remove the star nut? the headset cap in bonj's link looks good for the price (i've heard that it's superior to the star nut arrangement).

Unless you can knock the star nut through the bottom of your fork they're almost impossible to get out.
What is your steerer made from? Headset bungs were developed to avoid damaging soft alloy and carbon steerers. On a Steel steerer tube the only difference is they weigh more.

@Bonj, ideally your bung needs to be a stem level. Part of the idea is they support the inside of the steerer tube when you tighten the stem bolts.

ok i went into the LBS today and they just said 'oh, you just stick an 8mm allen key down the bung and turn it and it becomes loose'. duh! So it's higher now, high enough for the top cap bolt to go into and level with the stem.
