Spesh are asking £1600 for a Tiagra bike??? That's insane when you consider you can get SRAM Red carbon bikes for under a grand these days.

Aye but that's not full SRAM Red I'm sure for less than a grand and it's a question of balancing out a Planet X frame as against Specialized - not saying that I would be paying £1600 for a Tiagra equipped bike mind.

Sure, and it's an alu frame too. Still I think we're agreed on the lunacy of asking £1600 for a Tiagra bike.

Even though I own a Specialized MTB, I think they are like the clitoris of the road bike industry, every c*** has got one.

Seriously, I swear at any given sportive or club ride at least 50% of bikes are made by Specialized or Giant. They may be good bikes, I don't dispute that, but they use their reputation to inflate prices IMO.

As much as smokeysmoo gets on my tits with his CAAD bleating, I would much rather buy that CAAD10 at £999 than a Specialized with only Tiagra on it for £1600.

Yes but you are comparing a 2011 caad 10 with a 2012 spesh. Compare the 2011 spesh with the 2012 caad 10 and you would agree the spesh is the better value. I agree the caad is a good buy but the figures can be distorted when comparing diffrent year models.

I got a Planet X Nanolight with mostly SRAM Red for less than £1600. I don't care how good Specialized claim their frames are, no way would I pay £1600 for a Tiagra bike. And I don't believe for a minute there's anything special about that frame anyway (apart from being especially fugly with the massive headtube).

Right.

You've got me looking now. If I wanted a relaxed cruiser for £1600 I'd be giving this a very very close look.

Chorus 11 speed and Ksyrium Equipe. Beat that! :hello:

In truth though, what does a new model year REALLY offer you?

Usually an updated colour scheme, maybe a different crankset, seatpost and other little bits and bobs.

Obviously a 2012 versus say a 2009 will have some more noticeable differences but I have never bought a "latest" bike.

I bought my Focus Cayo 09 at the very end of 2009 and my '08 Specialized Hardrock in 2009.

Well the newer models usually have less impressive kit. Thats my point. Comparing a 11 caad 10 with a 12 roubaix yes the caad is better value which was being done a few posts ago. But if you compare the 2011 roubaix with a 2012 caad then the roubaix is better value. That is what i was saying before but on my phone so hard to get my point across. But i agree with you as far as if you can get hold of one before stocks run out go for a 2011 model like i have done. A lot better value.

I'll take that as a compliment GF

That's why I said in post #5, "while you can at this price!."

FWIW the 2012 CAAD10 105 is still more than £200 less expensive than the Specialized

[EDIT] slight cross with SW's #23 post.
