Hi guys,

First time posting on here so hope that I have observed the rules correctly.

So someone tried stealing my road bike on Christmas eve (Merry Christmas). As a result, they've left two cracks in its carbon fibre frame.

Just wondering whether you think it's repairable? I checked out a few videos and from my novice eyes, the damage doesn't look as bad as what has been fixed with a home repair kit.

I have attached pictures of the break to the post.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

All the best!

It is possible to repair carbon frames yet the feasibility of a safe repair needs to be assessed by a competent repairer. Where to find one is a different matter. Interestingly Amazon sell repair kits for bicycle carbon frames and a web search will probably show videos of people doing DIY repairs.

Carbon fibre is a very repairable material. The bike was constructed simply with carbon fibre cloth saturated with an epoxy resin which is repaired with cloth saturated with epoxy.

However . . . you need to 'understand' the materials and what you're doing before you simply apply a 'paint by numbers' repair kit. Youtube is full experts, but some are a bit suspect. However the videos from Easy Composites ( https://www.youtube.com/user/easycompositestv ) are a wonderful blend of expertese and clarity. I'm not sure they will teach you exactly how to reapir your bike, but will give you a good grounding in composite materials. From there you can make more informed choices about taking specific advice from elsewhere.

Professional repair is probably £200.00 plus.
if the OP wants to replace it the cheapest planet x i have seen is £700 so £200 is worth it if you want to stay carbon or you might pick up a second hand one for around 2-3 hundred

It's badly cracked but is repairable. You're best to find a specialist carbon repairer, possibly one close to you.

My Raleigh commuter had a downtube crack and it was a carbon boat company that did the repair; you couldn't tell except they didn't do any colour but black.

Thanks for the responses so far. Bought the bike second hand for 450 (attached below) so a £700 repair may not be worth it.

Best bet seems to be to just take it to the local bike shop. Issue is the only place close to me that repairs carbon fibre repairs is a place called HQ fibre. Will need the bike stripped to send off
