Out of curiosity, why are carbon bottle cages a waste of money and what material would you recommend and why?

What he said.....

Although for aesthetics I went with Matt black aluminum on mine.

Like I said in my original post. Take a shoot before you go if weight is so important and save your cash

A ligher bike with lighter components has better performance, yet you state carbon bottle cages which offer this are a waste of money, yet you admit to buying products for aesthetic value which offers no additional performance, or functionality to the bike what so ever.
So im curious to know if you consider your bottle cages to be a waste of money, you could have brought normal ones and saved your money.

They were cheap imports from China.

Bought for the looks, not the weight.

If I were a rich fanny with money to burn (I wish) then I'd have bought carbon.

I saved my hard earned to buy the best frame I could to ensure it would last way beyond my current performance, so I bought a supersix. If and when I feel that my needs really really need to save 1 or 2g then I'll waste my money on carbon accessories.

I'm the mean time, I'll just take a shoot before riding.

yes but i contend that even in the very highest race levels, the weight difference between a 31 g plastic cage and a 25 g carbon one really wont make a difference.

I don't think the weight difference of a few grams makes a jot of difference to us mortals. However, just knowing it is lighter gives a psychological effect that can be immeasurable on occasions.

on the other hand, they can also psychologically work the other way, making people think they dont need to work as hard coz their bike is feather light. its a much better motivator to try to keep up with someone on a carbon stick insect when youre riding an 11kg hybrid yourself!
