Hey Wetdog, your from Warrington mate? Got to be about the pies!
I'm the opposite, eat enough for a rugby team but still manage to be a skinny fart in the fog! Drives my missus crazy!

I got my mate into cycling coz his knees are shot, a year later and he's lost 3 stone and leaves me for dead up the hills. Keep on peddling fella.

I've got carbon and ally versions of the same bike. I'd had the ally one about a year, then I got the carbon one in a sale as the price was just too good to say no. Is the carbon one any better? No, not really. Ok, it's a bit lighter but that's about it. I had a thing about carbon and I had to get one so I understand...

funny thing about bikes, every person is different and a bike i may find great another same height as myself may hate, the same bike will behave completely different to some one weighing 7 stone to some one weighing twice that or more.
some bikes will only accept narrow tyres and perhaps a bike with 700x32 may give better service, if your own bike would take perhaps these tyres maybe you may like it better depending on your current tyre size.
if you bought a carbon version of your own cannondale synapse you may not even notice much change in performance, so my advice would be apart from considering wider tyres if required, forget about upgrading and just ride up grades, good luck and safe cycling.

Ok, so I've just ridden them back to back and I have to say the carbon bike does ride slightly nicer than the ally one. I does get up to speed quicker as its a bit lighter, and the carbon just feels a bit livelier than too. But that's not to say the other isn't a great bike because it is....

What is the spec comparison between the two bikes? Just so we can get an appreciation of whether both have the same spec except for the frame material...

What do you mean by "feels livelier"? if you could somehow be blindfolded and ride both one after the other without knowing which was which, what would "just feels livelier" mean?

Cheers

They are both Giant Defy, ally is 2013, carbon 2014. Both Shimano 105. I think it feels livelier because its noticeably lighter. It's difficult to explain but carbon just feels different. It sounds different as you ride it. But they both feel good as they are both good bikes.

Why not get a quality steel bike - you can sometimes get very nice vintage bikes on ebay with Reynolds 531 or similar tubing - they can be very nice to ride. Not like basic carbon steel which is dull and lifeless.
