Dealers... higher overheads, posher facilities, tied in customers.

I took my warranty and service out just for piece of mind but I do realise you've got to be careful. I have got a bargain on the servicing as it says two services and two MOT for £350. It's a van and normally would only get one service in 24 months. Works out at £125 a service (MOT £100 total) and the oil filters are averaging at £20, oil is £60 for 5l, and the van takes six.

Not my problem, but if they baulk at it I did ask the salesman and it does specifically say so on the agreement.

WHich is why I refused the wonderful looking servicing scheme the Honda garage offered me
it was fine if all went well - and slightly cheaper than getting it done at the independent garage I normally use
but if some work needed doing then the hourly charge was MUCH higher

And you can bet your bottom dollar bill there will be extra work required

The outcome! So after 4 hrs of diagnostic checks they hadn't worked out what was wrong, so a specialist Jeep technician was to be bought in, obviously to be paid my me. At this point I arranged a meet with the manager of the dealership, I managed to get the hourly rate down to £100 per hour. During the meeting i asked where the sales rep was that sold me the car, to be told he no longer works there, when i asked if he was pushed, they wouldnt say but did admit we werent the first customers to say we had been promised things that were not company policy
We went away and decided to chop the car in as we could end up paying thousands until a diagnosis was found with the repair price on top. On handover I said I'd been offered £14.5 k trade in so made 500 there to what was offered, also didn't mention the £400 I was supposed to pay for repairs. I asked if there was a warranty and got the 3 month standard, plus I paid for a 12month one, actually got in writing this time (so they do do it) that the 2 warranties will run one after the other! Refused to pay the £198 admin fee as I'd paid for that 8 months before. Got a full tank of petrol
When we went to swap belongings from old car to new, the old one was still on ramps in workshop 2 weeks later, I asked a mechanic if they were near fixing it, to be told they had got the engine turning manually but nothing else was working as in nothing was 'talking' to any part. So who knows how much it would have cost to repair.
Obviously I won't be using the dealership again, and the only good thought I have is they have lost out on thousands as I normally change my car every 4 years.

3 months warranty as standard?

How generous, especially when one considers the Consumer Rights Act 2015 effectively gives you 6 months of cover (any fault developing within 6 months is deemed to have been either present or developing at the point of sale andnitnis down to the vendor to rectify at their expense.)

I do hope the 12 month warranty you have purchased doesn't start until the cover provided by your statutory rights ends at 6 months.

It's always happened IME. I uses to take Salvesens pool cars to the dealerships for servicing. These were cars less than 3 years old and it was shocking how many times there would be several hundred pounds worth of extra work...an alternator or similar. Call me a cynic....

Camden motors unofficial motto used to be "Rape and Pillage."

Fortunately their greed didn't stop them going bust some years back,

Yup - I had a 5 year guarantee thing on my boiler some years ago - I had to pay a yearly amount
but every year there was a "service" and something always needed replacing - so it seemed worth it

Then I stopped the "guarantee" and 15 years later the boiler was still wroking fine and nothing had been replaced

I think it pays to be cynical about all these things

What happened to it and what car is it?

Crazy that a dealer hasn't located an issue or have a good idea withing 4 hours diagnostic time

As an aside, £172 an hour is digusting

Many mechanics don't have any diagnosis skills. If the code doesn't point directly to a faulty component, they don't know how to trace the fault or do further tests with multi meter, or oscilloscope.

I watch a few USA diagnostic channels from the USA, their fault finding skills are exceptional, even with just a 12V test lamp.

Sounds like the OP was shafted and then found out how crap their service side was

I'm sure there are guys here that can, but expect the channels you're watching such as Rainman Ray etc, they are exceptional in their field, that's why they're successful.
But like here, for every good one there's probably 200 mediocre ones.
Locally we used to have an auto electrical specialist...long gone and perhaps they can't really 'do' modern cars now with their complexity etc. But perhaps they may be the very people to use at times like these.
