The outcome! ...
When we went to swap belongings from old car to new, the old one was still on ramps in workshop 2 weeks later, I asked a mechanic if they were near fixing it, to be told they had got the engine turning manually but nothing else was working as in nothing was 'talking' to any part. So who knows how much it would have cost to repair.
Obviously I won't be using the dealership again, and the only good thought I have is they have lost out on thousands as I normally change my car every 4 years.
A Stellantis Group vehicle with canbus/electrical/ECU type issues you say?

Indeed. If youmhave a GCSE grade C or above in Physics then youre overqualified to be an engineer for Stellantis.

I take it they are a strong 'avoid'. I am currently in the process of finding a used Peugeot e208. Many of the better deals seem to be available through Stellantis, Carsupermarket and Big Motoring World. Went to my local Arbury dealer at the weekend and got the usual trying to strong arm me into a quick sale.

I know it varies from dealer to dealer but any advice as to which of the major companies I can avoid, or those that might be worth trusting would be appreciated!

TBF modern Pugs have a generally very good reputation, Citroën also pretty good. Jeep has been going through a distinctly dodgy patch aiui, and Fiat's, well, just Fiat, for good & ill (says the man who's expressed interest in the new Panda EV and currently runs a Mk3 Panda with electrical issues!)

Avoid indeed! They do make some great vehicles, but quite often it's a choice of wet belt hell on their petrol offerings or electrons says no on their E cars.

In terms of volume PSA were one of the biggest manufacturers that formed Stellantis, so its their major components and architecture thet got shared around Vauxhall, Jeep,Fiat, etc.

While it typically goes well not not a lot of it is renowned for reliability. All the reliability grief that was dragging PSA down 3 or 4 years ago has infected the other brands thwt have been compelled to adopt their engines, etc. Just look at the number of FB groups that abound for these problems.

Like any manufacturer you check the issues relating to certain models and engines. We've two Stellantis vehicles, and old Aygo and a new Vivaro Life - researched the best engine to get for the van TBH. Wet belts are the new thing and if you've not done oil changes to the book with the right oil, then it's an issue. The 1.5 diesels also have a cam chain that's 7mm and prone to snapping, updated to 8mm more recently.

Very helpful info, thank you!

Any strong opinions either way on the Hankook tyres or better alternatives?
Any experiences with blackcircles.com?

I'm sure there are guys here that can, but expect the channels you're watching such as Rainman Ray etc, they are exceptional in their field, that's why they're successful.
But like here, for every good one there's probably 200 mediocre ones.
Locally we used to have an auto electrical specialist...long gone and perhaps they can't really 'do' modern cars now with their complexity etc. But perhaps they may be the very people to use at times like these.
Rainman is a good mechanic, but really isn't very good with electronic electric diagnosis.

I watch Eric O from South Main Auto and Ivan from Pine Hollow Auto.

There are a few others too

I agree the best mechanics or diagnostic technicians are few compared to the vast majority.

You know you have a rare quality technician when other garages including main dealers send you their problem vehicles

I used to have a Nissan Micra Sport SR

basically a perfectly normal Nissan Micra
but with a 1.6 engine crammed into it and slightly better suspension and stuff

Great car
baby blue metallic colour so it looked normal

but annoyed several people who thought they could easily pass me and discovered that I got away from lights and things a lot faster than they thought

anyway - I used to get it services at a local basic normal garage
They were fine - did a good job normally

then one year I went to pick it up and as soon as I tried to drive off there was a problem
even with my foot right off the pedal - the engine kept revving like mad - really high revs down to idle - then back up
just constant

now - there is no way they could have parked it across the road without realising

but anyway - I went back and told them

they had it for another week - I went back every day to see where they were

after a few days they said there was a Nissan technician coming over - after work - with a Nissan computery thing to see what was wrong
I suspect he was a "mate" and was sneaking the device out afer hours

anyway - even that could not work out why the on board electronics were deciding that the engine needed to rev like mad all the time

I mean - it was probably a dodgy sensor or an air leak

but the mechanic at the garage could not work out which it was
and even the bloke from the Nissan garage with his "magic box" could not see what the problem was

maybe I could have taken it to the Nissan Garage myself and just paid what they said and they could have fixed it

but I decided to look around and came across a lovely Honda and managed to trade the Nissan in at a decent price (the cocky young salesman said the fault was minor and easily fixed based on a 5 minute test drive!!! - I wonder what his boss said after the service department had a look!!)

so I never saw it fixed

both cars were great - 2 of the best cars I have ever had

the current car has so many electronic controls and gadgets and systems that I do worry that if one goes wrong then the whole car will be screwed

It about having the data available for things like wiring connections, layout of looms in the car. I bought this for my imported American truck. With a decent scanner and a little bit of time, faults should be traced

There were a lot of issues caused by people not understanding the wiring on the SN95 variant of Ford Mustangs when carrying out the required work to get them to pass the checks for an Imported vehicle.
