Why is it than when I go for a ride with GF I'm happy to pootle along and take in the scenery, not even really paying much attention to speed, but when I go out on my own, even for a non commute run I feel the need to push as hard as I can?! I find it almost impossible to have a 'gentle' ride.Is this a common part of the addiction?

I've lost count of the number of times I've set out telling myself ''Relax, you're only out for a pootle'' and then, 3 miles later, I'm warmed up and looking at the computer, thinking of putting a little more power down. I think I'm going to have to attach a kiddie carrier to my bike (plus the G-child, of course) before I'll be able to really take it easy.

Adding to that does anyone else suffer from Hill Suck? I go out on the bike intending to do a flat pootle and find myself being drawn irresistibly towards doing climbs. And its not as if I don't know its going to be hard work and hurt!

Maybe it's an age thing. I tend to bimble along and stop to watch a Kestrel hunting or to look at the view or simply take a break. My best rides of the week are often my slowest

I often wonder if other cyclists would realise that I was riding flat out... as they sauntered past me watching the kestrels.

No, but strangely I suffer from something similar - in that it is the exact opposite!

Cycling is the only exercise I get so I tend to ride hard all the time. Except for when I reach the top of a hill, when I normally allow myself a breather and freewheel for a bit.
