I saw a version of that years ago and was gobsmacked at the result ...
It is for the same reason that drivers don't see cyclists when they are looking out for cars!

I got the number of passes correct and also the gorilla was blindingly obvious, don't see how you could miss it.

The version I saw originally had far more players making far more passes so it took a lot of concentration to count them. I had to narrow my focus to the players in white so I unknowingly filtered out the black gorilla.
This version is not quite so effective so I can see how it didn't catch you out.
