I ask more out of interest than anything else as I think I'll stick with SRAM. However I'd be interested to know if I have the choice.

Note I'm only talking about the front shifter and crankset.

Yes. I have even used a Campag crank with a Shimano setup.

Generally, you can use any crankset. BUT, the new SRAM Red specifies (according to one website I recall seeing recently when trying to decide between SRAM Red and Shimano DA, still can't decide) only using the new mech with the new crankset. Not sure of the the practicalities of going against this (might be marketing).

Was that relating to the SRAM RED EXOGRAM ? This is from the CRC page on that set ...

Innovation often comes from places you‘d least expect. In order to make a lighter crankset, we made it bigger. To add stiffness, we used less material. The new SRAM RED Exogram Crankset is completely hollow all the way to the spider. Its hidden bolt pattern makes better use of carbon fiber to further improve stiffness and shed weight. The stunning X Glide R chainrings are optimized for use with the YAW Technology in the front derailleur, delivering seamless, flawless performance.
