For what its worth, whilst Trim can be useful for short amounts of time, I have found that with a well setup system the mech rubbing on the chain means that I'm on the wrong ring and I shouldnt be cross chaining that much!

Totally. Trim allows use of all gears. Whether you should use them is totally down to the rider.

Ok, not so much a 'blonde moment', more early onset dementia in my case!

In simple, very simple, terms which lever on the left do I click and how far to trim the front derailleur on my new Giant Defy 0 which is equipped with Shimano Ultegra gears? I have noticed that the chain seems to be catching very slightly on the front derailleur and am thinking that I need to use the 'trim' function.

Any kind replies to an ageing cyclist welcome!

one click, in the direction you're changing

You should see the derailleur move a little in the direction you're "about" to be changing into

I am so grateful for this thread as it meant I was able to nod and hmm in the right places when the mechanic at my LBS went off on a long-winded explanation about some work he'd done to my road bike last week.

However having read your post again, if it's happening in all gears your derailleur might need adjusting before we start worrying about trim!
