'In the six days since a law to prosecute dangerous cyclists was announced, somewhere close to 30 people will have been killed on UK roads, none of them struck by bikes'.

More people are killed each year in the UK by stampeding cattle or lighting strike than by bicycles. Where is the specific death by stampeding cattle law?

Toothpick ingestion kills as many as bicycles do in a typical year. Toasters kill more people than bicycles do, either directly by electrocution or indirectly by fire, yet where is the Morphy Richards law?

We, the enlightened, know these truths but good luck getting car driving unwashed masses to acknowledge that.

It's a populist move by the government (I'd have thought IDS would have more sense, especially as he looks the image of my late dad) who have a election coming up don't forget.
I would add that cattle don't even need to be stampeding, walkers have been trampled by cows simply walking through their field.

Of course, but the people to say that to are the motorists, preaching to the converted on here achieves nothing. I've made that argument more times than I could count, but to the anti-cycling motorists on Twitter, and usually with no support from other cyclists.

Indeed. I thought IDS had become a little more humane and compassionate in his old age, but clearly I was wrong.

He looks very like my Dad too...Brother dearest!

I dunno. It made me feel better for the 34 minutes it took me to type it.

Ha ha. Better still, put it into politics(ncap) so it cannot get closed or get little replies.

Help me out here. Were you concerned with the size of replies (presumably with an eye to the forum host's digital memory limits), or were you concerned with the number of replies? Because if it were the number of replies that interested you, presumably you would have used the word "few" (or "fewer") rather than "little". I'm curious, because I am trying to derive some meaning from the word soup that this thread started with......and the more I look, the less I see.
