Heh heh. Welcome to the confusing !
Both my steel bikes glide over crap road surfaces better than my fixed with carbon forks. There is just that little bit more fore/aft give in steel than in 'standard' carbon forks - I no doubt some of the more expensive carbon forks will respond much better.

Deda Road Bike Quill to Ahead Handlebar Stem Adapter 22.2mm - £13.95
Heavy Duty Headset Head Bicycle Bike Wrench 30/32/36/40mm Spanner Repair Kit W42 - £6.49
TOTAL - £46.69
Threadless headset costs
So I use carbon forks
Headset - £0 (I have one on my current SS)
Threadless carbon forks £40 (if I'm lucky)
TOTAL - £40
Actually there's not much in it is there!
