A good point depending on what chainset is sourced. I suppose I was fortunate that when changing the knockabout bike it already had the requisite size BB.A good, relatively cheap proposition, but occasionally not without its own problems.
My sons bike had a 42/32/22 which was about cream crackered. No problem, i have a used 48/38/28 (or thereabouts)...i'll fit that.
No....the outer chainring fouled the chainstays. Obviously a wider BB would have compensated, but suddenly its become more complicated (and expensive) than anticipated
Another simpler option would be to change the big chain ring to a 44tooth. This would give a smaller but still noticeable increase in top end gearing. A longer chain would be required too.
