So either they'll allow no chain tension when on the small ring and in small sprockets - noisy and inefficient.

That's the way my triple + 13-26 was set-up but lack of chain tension was immaterial because I never used that combination and I can't see any real need to. Either side of that ratio was available in the middle chainring and the chainline on small/small was horrible (but not as bad as that in big/big, though).

Putting a 12-27 cassette on a campag short mech set up is only just out of spec and my guess is that that you'd get away with it. I've just got a Miche 12-27 10 speed cassette to put on my Centaur set up - I'm expecting that it'll be perfect, but I might be wrong.

Interesting post. I've found it difficult to find definitive information, but it would appear that Campagnolo quote/quoted a maximum of 26 teeth for Veloce short cage mechs. My calculations and ChainLengthCalc indicate that for me the chain length required will remain exactly the same as with 11-25, at 53 links. Just been informed that my cassette (Miche 12-27, snap!) is on its way, so we shall see........
