My preference is a cable lock to a tree or post near the tent. I avoid camping near large cities. Crime must be the reason why Bordeaux has no campsite nearer than 6km, or if it has, the tourist office didn't know about it.

It might be worth searching the Touring section of the forums for 'locks' the question seems to come up fairly regular.

Personally I use a cable lock for camping, it's not very secure vs a pair of boltcutters, but lighter and can fit easily around stuff like trees, fenceposts, or just thru both wheels. Although I'm a relative newbie, best have a look over there.

Theft doesn't seems like much of a risk most of the time, but it probably depends on the campsite. Scots highlands bit different from some packed out campsite on the edge of a city or at some seaside resort.

You can buy a thing called a ground anchor which is like metal peg shaped like a corkscrew that you twist into the ground. Its almost impossible to pull out without turning it in hard ground.

Old trick is to attach a thin piece of fishing line with some empty cans at the other end inside your tent. Someone tries to move it it makes a lot of noise.

Wow you can buy them? I was going to make one. Thought it was too good an idea to have not already been thought of.

Don't even think about it. Two members of our cycling club had their bikes stolen from 10 feet away from their tent where they had cable locked them to a tree. Theives tend to go round capsites looking for bikes, you see.

Lock bikes in the car or a proper lockup.

I've seen some recommend two cheap dog anchors. Screw them both into the ground, close to each other, and them placing a lock through both means you can't just lift and turn the bike to unscrew the anchor from the ground.

Mind, I've never taken a bike camping and I'm just repeating what I've read elsewhere.

I suppose you could even take the quick release front tyre and seat off and keep those locked in the tent also.

Problem is that tents arent very lockable ,it would be obvious where the bits were.we have taken our bikes on campsites lots of times and never had one nicked so its not as bad as you might think. There are usually dozens of bikes lying around campsites totally insecure so if you keep yours locked up as best as you can chances are it will be ok.

I have just had a brainwave:biggrin: Use a dog anchor to attatch the main guy rope of your tent to also lock your bike to it. Anyone tries to tamper with the anchor will cause your tent to fall down at which point you spring out in your Y fronts with baseball bat in hand.

The sight of me in my underwear springing out my tent in the black of night should be enough to frighten anyone off.
That is actually a brilliant idea. I like the fishing line trip wire idea someone mentioned too.
