Hi there,

Desperately seeking an 8 speed campag rear derailleur in working condition, if anyone has one spare or knows of one I'd be very grateful!

Willing to pay a reasonable price.

Thanks!

Unles you are doing it for reasons of original purity, you can use a 9 or 10 speed, which will widen your choice somewhat.

Compatability

I spoke to the lad in my LBS and he reckons 9 speed derailleur wouldn't work very well with 8 speed setup?

Cheers

Technically, things changed in 2001, when the geo of the rear derail changed to take 9 speed. Similarly, you can change the lever inners or the pulley wheels for a "proper job".

However, I have run an 8 speed campy mech with all sort of 9/10 combos for time to time, and it works fine. I think the differences were minimal.

Have an ask on campyonly.com

a 9 speed rear mech will work on indexed, but it may be slightly out on the changes. 8 have d/t levers and converted back to friction as there was always a slight bit of chain noise.

I used a 2005 Xenon nine speed rear mech with a 1998 Chorus nine speed shifter on a 2005 cassette, and as Bigtwin says they're not 100% compatible. I'm not being bigheaded when I say I know a bit abot bike maintainence but I couldn't get the chain to run smooth accross every sprocket, the best thing I could do was to set the indexing up for the centre cog and bodge the indexing as best as possible. When the chain was on the lowest and highest gears it was out slightly by a mm or so and gave that irritating rattle.

Changing the rear mech to a 1998 Avanti cured the problem instantly though. ;)

There is no Shiftmate solution to this problem.

Model #4 with a shimano mech & cassette?

Maybe not directly but lots of work around options that's probably cheaper/easier in the long run than new ergos.

*Edit, just noticed this note at the bottom of the page in reference to this exact problem:

Notes: mixing older and newer Campagnolo components is not recommended. The cable pull rate changed between versions. A ShiftMate model #1 can be used to allow the combining of older and newer versions. Contact us for more details.

Sounds like it's worth an email. Personally, I'd try it first and see if you can live with it. If you set it up mid 8 speed (I know you can't technically, but you know what I mean), you may find that it's workable, especially if you have a bit of wear/give in your drivechain. The "drift" will obviously be less than over an 11 speed block.
