I've got 10 speed Record on my Victoire, although they're a few years old.

I get 4 clicks moving from chainring to chainring, so I conclude that would mean 3 trimming positions.

Old style L/H ergos had a multi ratchet - so jpembroke's 20 clicks sounds right so you could do whatever you liked with it and it worked. But it wasn't front indexing so they gave us QuickShift for dummies (ex Shimano users? :girl: ) that couldn't manage a front mech. The 2007 and 2008 QS ones (below Chorus) had 4 positions and more cable pull in an attempt to index them but still allow some trimming on a triple. Nobody liked QS so in 2009 they gave us UltraShift which I understand is multi-ratchet again but I haven't tried it so I don't know.

Ant --- I use the LH lever to change the rear mech (only having one arm). It's actually do-able with the multi-ratchet version, you just have to click twice to go from 19-17 and 15-14.

I really don't want to have to go the bar-end shifter route.
