Ah, this thread keeps coming round like a bad hangover! Well, if your a purist, then I would say Campag. The look, sound and quality is superb.............
Personally I now use Campag. I used to use Shimano (started off with 105 and slowly upgraded everything to Dura Ace) but when the Ergo levers came in I didn't like the design of the Shimano ones 0 the cables stuck out too much - so I've been Vampag ever since.
I am an ignorant play-cyclist so I have no opinion as to which is better - only that Campag stuff is carbon (mmmmm!!!) so wins me over - except for their cranks - I prefer the weave of carbon not the multi-directional stuff they use.
Having said all that I do mix and match a bit - FSA crankset and Marchisio cassette, Saso seatpin and Dura Ace SPD-SL pedals.
It's a fair question. For the mass producers like Trek and Giant, they need a groupset supplier who churns out as much as them to suit the manufacturing/assembly model, while Campagnolo could never sustain that same output capacity.
This makes sense for a lot of the "lower end" bikes (<£1000), but as you go up the range there can be a bit more customisation as the profit margins get stupidly high and the production volume is lower.
When SRAM entered the equation it became even more complicated as they have had to fight for a share of the road market. Team replica frames are more likely to have the same flavour on as the pros - Boardman bikes were Shimano until the Olympics when they switched most of the range over to SRAM as that is what Cooke was riding.
I think a groupset may well get chosen today on the basis of which users find the more comfortable to use,.
Personally having tried both Ergo and Sti for many years I choose Sti every time now because I find the levers more confortable to use. I also prefer the aesethetics of Shimano chainsets
There are many reasons why people chose one or the other or neither and I don't think the issue is so much one of tradition or quality these days .
many young cyclist's today are unaware of the tradition argument and have no allegience or preference either way and are more free to choose alternatives like Sram and mavic etc
