Nooo! Don't go there. Purists like Campag (massive generalisation), and many Italian bike manufacturers use Campag because they want an 'all Italian' bike type thing.
The real pros use SRAM.... (joke, but possibly with a hint of truth?)

Fair enough question I suppose, rather than the 'which is better'...I have noticed some companies favour one over the other, whereas some have a split. There are even some companies who used to favour one who now favour the other. And some who favour one who should know better.

And on lots of expensive bikes, and even some not so, they give you a choice, which I think is best really...

campag = like alfa romeos - posh, panache, flair, style, but a tad unreliable,
shimano = like toyotas, nissans - works well, but for some a tad on the boring side?
that's how i see it

Good question. To be honest, I'd probably have bought campag for my good bike when I was building it last year (just for the acceptance of the purists if nothing else), but apart from only ever using shimano (and getting a great deal on an ultegra groupset) what swayed me was the easy availability of shimano stuff from my LBS. I don't live out in the sticks either so I would have thought there would be at least one place stocked Campag.

Shimano stuff just seems to be so much easier to come by. Not a problem if you can wait and order stuff online, but if you need something same day, it's the difference between going out for a ride or doing without the bike for a weekend. I think maybe a few manufacturers realise this easy availability and play it safe.

I'd still kill for a Pegoretti Responsorium or Marcelo wearing carbon Record and Campag Hyperon Ultra wheels though.
