Campag shifters and shimano derailleur

I would like to fit a shimano rear wheel to my campag 9 speed setup, I am thinking of using a 9 speed shimano mountain bike cassette with a bigger range and paired with a shimano long cage derailleur. Will my 9 speed campag mirage shifters index this correctly?

You can do that with some Campag shifters..... Veloce is one of them. read this

Sorry Manonabike I think the OP is talking about using a 9 speed Campag shifter with Shimano rear mech and 9 speed cassette, which won't work irrespective of whether it is Veloce or otherwise. The Cyclocross mag article talks about using a 10 speed Campag shifter, Shimano mech indexing with a 9 speed Shimano cassette with the Hubbub cable clamping method.

The classic article on the subject is this by Chris Juden. With Campag 9 speed shifters and modern Shimano rear mech, Hubbub will allow you to index an 8 speed Shimano cassette.

I haven't tried this yet but why not just stick the Campag spacers beween the Shimano sprockets?

True, but watch out because a) only 8 Campag 9 speed spaced* sprockets can fit within a Shimano 8/9/10 speed hub, and b) only if the largest sprocket of the mountain cassette is within the Campag rear mech's sprocket size limit, which officially is 29T for all modern Campag mechs irrespective of cage length.

* using specially designed spacers such as those by Highpath. Shimano and Campag sprockets are of different thickness.
