I have not had them break but obviously the constant use does stress the metal after a while and it loses it's springiness.

Okay - all done and dusted!
Stripped down and replaced G springs, added some grease and reassembled. The tricky part is re-tensioning. It's just at the end too when you think it was a piece of cake!
I can now add that procedure to my palmarés. Easy once you've done it once.
Also replaced all the cables, brake and gear, with Campag's ultra shift set. Shifting is now back to new and click is even louder than before. Total time for shifter rebuild was about 40 minutes. Refitting the shifter and doing the cables and outers from scratch probably took the whole job to 3 hours.
Quick test ride and everything is working great!
