On the continent I do as it is that much hotter. I could go 60km without passing anywhere to get more water so it was kind of necessary.

Over here I barely use it.
 
Seems a really silly idea to strap water on your back. Your bike can carry as much water as you want - why carry it yourself?

OK so drinking is important, but it is a bit overrated. People can hardly break a sweat without gulping down a bottle of isotonic power mix.

Judge where you are going and take water depending on availability. then just stop now and again for a drink.

Yep, always carry one if I'm doing more than 10 miles, but then it also carries my pump, toolkit, spare tube and phone. Bottles only last so long on rough tracks.
