Thanks but no thanks. I think I'll pass.
Can I pick and keep the Garmin card? Strava is depressing!

I would go for the one that makes you feel the best. and that would be the highest one.:giggle:

I find every tool gives a different count!

So today I rode 15 miles in 1hr 16 mins. I currently weigh 16 stone 9 lbs.
  • Garmin says 912 calories burnt
  • MyFitnessPal says 799 calories burnt
  • Strava 390 calories burnt
I don't use a heart rate monitor, these are all based on the stats of the ride and my weight.
A HRM doesn't really add much to the accuracy of those figures ;)

I find the most accurate method of estimating calorie usage is with tarot cards, although flipping a coin is also pretty accurate.. ;)

It's all very well saying "xx calories = 1lb of fat' and the like, but the only real test is to stand on the scales and read the dial.

You burned what you burned - at the rate you burned it. If you'd ridden harder, you'd have burned more - if you'd ridden more slowly, you'd have burned less. The nature of calorie usage means that it's quite possible that you may have burned more by riding a shorter route faster. But the important thing is that the fitter you become, the easier it will be to ride harder and burn more calories.

The added bonus of a good workout is that your body keeps on burning calories at a faster rate long after the exercise has finished. Just Google "Afterburn effect"

I started using a rider 20 on friday, I cant include Saturdays ride as it was a bit cocked up with the recordings but the three I can use the 6th 8th and 9th have different % fat used
-----%fat-------Cals------Fat weight loss oz---Miles
----------------------------------------based on 3500
----------------------------------------cals a lb

6th-11.81%,--1711cals --0.92oz--------32.37
8th-18.69%,--1712cals --1.46oz--------31.71
9th-21.79%---1836cals --1.83oz--------35.23

The only real difference between the rides was that the ride yesterday (9th) included a little more climbing, the 6th was pretty flat but faster (not by much 16.5mph compared with 15.6mph on the 9th), so the conclusion I would come to is that hillier rides where you work harder help to reduce fat more. Even though my avg H.R. was lower yesterday at 138BPM compared with the 6th @ 147BPM

Sunday http://www.brytonsport.com/mapTrackView/2?id=4862059
Fridays http://www.brytonsport.com/mapTrackView/2?id=4848901

Edit the Garmin the way I had it set up gave between 37 and 46 cals/mile the Bryton so far is showing higher at about 52-53 cals/mile so I guess I have the H.R. zones slightly different on the Bryton.

as I'm also trying to loose weight before my first sportive in April

Well done on your ride mate.

What your diet is like is the key question in this equation in my view. I agree with others who have said calculating calorie expenditure from exercise is generally an exercise in futility.

Good diet plus concentrating on improving your fitness will do wonders with little stress.

Done my first 60 miler today with @Doyleyburger in 4 hours 40 mins

Ok I didn't set the world alight as it was more to do with getting the miles in but didn't think it was to bad with 4,700ft of climbing

Anyway I burned 2,472 calories on the ride so is this a good amount burned as I'm also trying to loose weight before my first sportive in April

Thats about the same calories I would burn over that distance and climb.. Which is good news fo both of us.
