It's about the size of a car's petrol cap.

Costs about a tenner.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the type of thing you are looking for (done the same myself) light, pocketable etc. But it'll not keep your bike safe. Any thief with a wire cutter will get through it in seconds. The least you would need to be safe might be something like this. http://www.abus.com/uk/Mobile-Security/Bike-Safety-and-Security/Locks/Folding-locks They fit into a seat bag and cost about 30 quid. Not as heavy as a cumbersome U lock, but 10x more secure than a cheapo. Depends how much you value your bike.

There is quite a few small locks out there on the market designed for such use even by top companies ie Abus and Kryptonite, I use a Raleigh one, but see it is not listed in the catalogue anymore, but I see they have this one listed and in a survey I just came across its listed in the top ten in 10th place. But as mentioned, they are not that much of a detterent and when I use mine, I still like to be able to see my bike from inside the shop or cafe.

I know they dont stop theives, but they are put off the snatch and grab ones ! My bike is usually allways in view, didnt stop one getting stolen by some scrote who jumped on one and got away, not 5 yards from where owner was sitting ! (Last week) I usually loosen front scewer on mine .

Tyre are insulators. So how about a device that puts a large static charge into your bike. You would need to remember to earth it before leaving.

Not much of a visible deterrent, I suppose, and it may not work for carbon frames.

Well, write it down boy ......
I bought one from Aldi a while ago, cost less than a fiver. It has a combination lock, retractable wire and is small. It's only to stop someone jumping on my bike and riding off I'd never leave it for long (and don't actually like leaving my bike out of sight as well). Amazes me how many people do leave their bike unlocked.
