I use a cadence sensor and find it very useful.
Just having the number there to see serves as a reminder. Odd to say but even after 5 years of 'serious' (sorry ) riding, I still can find myself grinding up hills and being surprised as just how much easier it is if I get the cadence up above 90.
I now use an Edge 305 but previously had a Cateye Astrale 8. Worth the bit extra in my personal opinion.
