I have these Draper Expert 57768 cutters. They are really good and you can probably find them for under a tenner (inc postage) if you look around.

If you are fitting the new Shimano 11 speed stuff then use the new coated cables & Shimano outer casing - expensive - yes - but important for good slick shifting

I took the shimano coated ones off my bike after I changed a RD cable on a friends bike which had snapped in the shifter and I found that the coating had rubbed off and gummed up the entry and exit of every outer cable and also in the shifter.......:headshake:

Using a quality tool is paramount. Never tried the old inner cable when cutting trick, but never had a problem with outer flattening either. Having the right tool helps.

I also had the same issues of the Shimano 11 speed coating shedding and causing more restriction in the outers than the worth of it.
