The Cad8 comes with Sora groupset The Cad 9 comes with 105 but the bike is nearly double the price. If money was no object the 9 wins but I really cant see that its worth so much more than the 8.

Both have a good name.

When I bought my CAAD9 is was £1k for CAAD8 with 105 or CAAD9 w Tiagra. The 2010 CAAD9 is now selling for ~£800 w Tiagra.

The link in my first post is to Tredz Website. You are quite right I hadnt spotted that.

Obviously different deals can be found if you shop around. Just had another look you can still get a Tiagra 9 for £800 but the Sora 8 is only £520 The 105 caad 9 is £999

And can you really tell the difference in 'suppleness' between two aluminium frames? Really?

Yes. Aluminum frames are stiff. Good aluminum frames are stiff where stiffness is required, and have a bit of flex where it isn't. The CAAD9 frame feels more like a good steel frame - but half the weight. That's why it's rated as one of, if not the best alu road frames money can buy.

Comparing Sora and 105 is a bit dangerous - they are very different. Sora - > Tiagra isn't quite so far off but with Tiagra at least you can shift whilst on the drops.

It creaked and groaned relatively more than the CAAD 9. All bikes do to some extent.

I can tell the difference in the suppleness that's for sure.

Anything else you want to challenge me on?

It wasn't personal. I was just pointing out that whatever we think, and we all do this, the 'feel' we get from a bike is mostly down to a combination of size, geometry, contact points and components - handlebars flex more than most things, wheels and tyres are the most important thing for the comfort of the ride - and even psychological things like frame colour! It isn't really the imperceptible differences in frame materials and superficial design 'innovations' from one model to the next.

And as for the creaking and groaning, I didn't doubt that your bike creaked and groaned, I did doubt that your frame creaked and groaned. The former is normal and a lot of it can be remedied, the latter might indicate a problem. Just trying to help out...

The late great Sheldon Brown has a lot more on frame materials and their effects: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/frame-materials.html

I purchased the CAAD 8 Last night, was a bargain , I was in 2 mins about waiting for a used CAAD 9, but once I rode it, there was no looking back, the best bikes I have owned have been Audaxe's and while there were VERY good bikes, this bad boy surpasses then with ease , the only downside was the test ride was at 7pm last night and it was FREEZING and there is ice everywhere today, so it now might be a while before I get a proper ride

Thanks Peeps

Just Tiagra right now, but that leaves me much room in the budget for a Ultgra Groupo :-)...The bike was a bargain and new, so over the winter, i'll get an upgrade and flog off the unused one ...WIN WIN

I've heard that Tiagra is pretty resilient, so another option would be to ride it through the winter, then come spring strip it, clean it, then sell it as used. You may get more out of the bike that way in the coming months, and won't have to worry about the weather ruining pricey ultegra bits.

Have fun with it

I bought my CAAD3 in 96/97 and the cost then was £900 IIRC!! - I ended up buying mine in the USA for about $900, it was a favourable exchange rate at the time, and bringing it back on the plane (not in the overhead locker!). The nice customs man at Heathrow said as far as he was concerned a bike was made up of components none of which were valued at a taxable rate so nothing to pay!
