She doesn't say she is trying to lose weight though?

Given he's a weightlifter, maybe that's all he knows how to train?
Possible, I said If though ;)

Just a counter point, as to why there may be a lot of weights work, rather than, stupid PT being stupid.

If I want to get more enjoyment from cycling, I cycle. But then I'd rather do anything other than spend time in a gym during the summer, especially lifting weights!!

Ok, so my thoughts on this is.. stretching. Preferably yoga-based. I am doing lots of cycling, plus training in the gym 5 or 6 days a week. Squats, deadlifts, kettlebells, etc etc, as well as a bit of cardio. And lots of stretching and yoga. I get the normal muscle burn when cycling uphill, id be a bit worried if I didn't, tbh, but nothing that would spoil my ride.
From the OP's post its highly unlikely that overtraining is an issue but ive a feeling your muscles are getting a little tight if youre doing too much weight orientated stuff and not much stretching. Sign up for a couple of yoga classes to learn how to stretch properly, and ive a feeling you will feel a big difference sooner than you would imagine.

OK, one other thing that no-one has mentioned yet. Are you also on any medication, particularly statins? There's a pretty well known side-effect of some of them that can show itself with exactly those symptoms. You can be on the little pills for years then one day it just kicks in. Typically your doc will then just shift you to a different statin and it'll clear it. Happened to me and a couple of folks I know. In my case one day I could run up hills the next I couldn't, hurt like hell after a few minutes. Took about a week to stop after doc changed the prescription.
