Hi
Does anyone know why this bulge has developed on my rear tyre? I think it has happened over the weekend or on the ride to work this morning. Is it likely to split? Could it be a puncture repair patch that is peeling away? Any ideas? Thanks

Possibly a failure in the tyre casing. I would deflate and take it off to have a good look.

Looks like you were right...picture doesn't show it at all well, but the casing has stretched exposing the 'threads' underneath. What should I do?

How many miles have you done? if not many on that tyre i would contact the manufacturer and try to get a replacement.

I don't think that's an option because I'm sure I've done a lot of miles on them - had them from new at least a year. Maybe 3,000 miles?

I had something similar on a Conti Ultra race, in my case it looked like sidewall damage from a kerb or similar. Went staight in the bin - just too much chance of blowing instantly to be worth the risk....

I'm tight as a gnat's chuff and I currently ride an old Michelin tyre that was old when I got it off ebay and it's a lot older now, but I like it a lot 'cos (he said, touching wood) it's proved very reliable and you-know-what resistant (after I had so much trouble with various Contis), and it has a couple of bulges in the sidewall not unlike yours, but I kind of pretend it's ok (while keeping an eye on it)...BUT I really don't like the look of your very first picture. That looks well dodgy to me, and TBH I don't think even I would ride on that.

If you need to use it until you can get a replacement, wrap something around the tube at that point to reinforce it a little.

I know I know...you're right of course. I should 'introduce it to Ms Bin'. But it's been (he said without wishing to tempt fate) *so* reliable. At this time last year, I was getting one or more punctures a month - at one point I got three in a week. This thing seems bullet proof - nothing since before Christmas. And that's despite running it at about 70psi (I daren't inflate it any further, for fear of explosions...)

Maybe I will change it. Like you say, it is tempting fate...
