Howdo,

I'm about to start building up a new bike. I'm trying to add up the weights and prices of an awful lot of components, and can feel myself getting a little lost. Things I need to buy are:

  • A strong 26" rear wheel. Light, but able to take lateral forces. I'm guessing that means MTB. No braking system required.
  • Hydraulic disk brakes. Either 2 x front, or a pair (with an extra bracket to fit).
  • Cranks - This might restrict my choices of chain rings. I want 155mm.
  • Chainrings - I tend to spin out, so probably something with at least a 53 on it.
Ideally something in the range 53/34, but that's probably too big a jump for most front derailleurs(?).
Could be a triple. Will need to fit cranks.
  • Rear cassette - probably 11-34. Depends how small I can get the front. 9spd/10spd/ don't mind.
  • Bar end levers and all cables for gearing.
  • Time Atac pedals. A pair of the lighter versions. ROC would do it.
  • Anything else I've missed out.
I'm budgeting to come in around the SRAM red price area, but am happy to have last year's models.
  • Can anyone recommend a shop / site that might do a deal on what could be quite a big list?
  • Anyone got any thoughts on the component line up?
  • Anyone got an experience doing this?
Obviously, some will read this and try to work out what I'm building. If you haven't got it in the first two bullets, you ought to have it by the next pair. If you haven't, well, you'll just have to wait for the pics.

TA certainly do bigger chainrings, eg:

Have you found:

?

When I've built frames up in the past, I've just used the usual suspects, eg CRC, Parker, Ribble, Merlin.

You might find a (real) shop that'll do a deal, I'm not aware anyone online that does - being selective with what's from which (online) shop might make just as much difference. That said, there are some better priced online shops that have a real bike shop attached - less likely to be local to you. (At one point Sigma Sport - now in Kingston - were one of the cheapest, but that *was* when it was one bloke selling parts from his bedroom a short walk round the corner !)

Cables I get from my LBS anyway, that way you get as much or as little as you want.

What frame are you lobbing it all on ? - I've spotted it's obviously a trike ;)
