Looking for a reasonable first road bike which will cope with a few sportives and long rides and won't cost the earth! After looking at all the web sites and magazine reviews decided that the Btwin 700 Alur seemed to tick most of the boxes, only to then discover it's not currently available in any large sizes!! Question is does anyone know if they are likely to become available again (had read somewhere that Btwin often have supply problems) or has anyone got one and are they any good? If not what would people recommend as a possible alternative ( not looking at secondhand or anything north of a grand though)!

You should have loads of choice for that sort of money. One thing that caught my eye on

was the carbon Holdsworth, although the RT-58 is generally well regarded. Boardmans, cubes or giants are also a possibility

and this time of year you can generally get a good discount on the 2014 models.

What was it about the Btwin that caught your eye and how large is large?

Cheers for the replies gents, the as regards the Btwin Alur I noticed they were raving about it in a bike magazine review, also had a little look at it in one of the decathlon sports shops and liked it a lot! I'm just over 6ft tall and they only have it in their small size currently! The Mach 700 would be possible alternative though! Like the look of the Ribble bikes and the Giants......... Oh dear now I'm even more confused!!

Don't be, calm down and breath deeply. At this time of year you can get a lot of bike for that sort of money especially if you're after a larger size tall boy. Go to a few bike shops, Evans is a good place to start as they always have a lot in, but try other shops as Evans don't stock all brands. Enjoy yourself, eventually you'll find a bike that screams BUY ME and at that point you've found your bike.
