Cake or ice cream? The choice is endless ...

Realising that mine should have been simmering gently since late August, should Sprouts have a cross cut into the stalk end?
My mum always did it & I've followed her lead but is it actually necessary?

shred them and saute in butter and garlic with chestnuts and bacon*.

*although I'm not allowed to add this due to a vegetarian brothier in law

I don't cross cut - might trim off any dried leaves/stem, but that's it. Quickly steam, then stir fry in sesame oil with sesame seeds - fabulous. Keeping them simple this year, just steamed.

We cross cut but not entirely convinced it's necessary. My wife likes them really well done (I dont) so probably won't bother cutting them this time.

If the sprouts were really fresh and tight..perhaps theres a good case for cross cutting

Toasted pine kernels are very good instead... Obviously not a substitute for bacon, but very 😊

the store cupboard will stretch to sesame seeds, not sure about pine nuts, but maybe some hidden behind the walnuts

Depends how well cooked you like them. And how large they are.

My wife likes hers well done, almost but not quite mushy, while I like them to still be quite crunchy.

Hers get the cross-cut except on small ones, mine don't, and are done (for a few minutes) in a steamer over the pan hers are boiling in.
