I cracked my rib a few years ago thanks to a comedy fall (foot slipped off the pedal and jammed the front wheel!!). You'll probably find that the pain begins to subside over the next week or two. Like @fossyant, I kept on cycling (got back on the bike straight afterwards, though the ibuprofen I took probably helped there!). You just need to take things easy for 3-4 weeks, that's all. There's no reason why you won't be able to do the Manchester ride: your ribs should have healed by then so you'll be able to laugh without the pain!

True, I've been easing back into it, few small rides now and the gym, tried some sit ups, that was the killer, but getting better every day, I take the tablets and the white rabbit coaches me the rest of the day ( nah, just needs if I do something stupid like sit ups lol) I think most falls have comedy element I'm sure mine looked great gracefully over the bars and bike following almost in symmetry lol. Good progress though Keegs more manly than me!

That's, what, four weeks after breaking it? It can take as much as another couple of months before the bones reach maximum strength. It's worth asking the consultant over how much you can do: it seems quite early to be doing much load bearing on your hip as yet so I'd stick with the crutches for the moment.
Yeah, unfortunately that is exactly what the consultant told me on Friday. guess i was just being more hopeful that realistic!! My X-ray showed the signs of healing but still a bit longer to go. I've compromised and gone down to one crutch! New goal is to be rid of them by two weeks time as i have a few days away booked with the missus and no kids! Think the turbo trainer may have to wait a little longer though, and getting back out on the road might still be 5 or six weeks away, which is annoying with this lovely weather outside! As a sidenote, i reckon i've put on about a stone in the last 4 weeks!!
