That's me at the moment!

I had an off a week ago and now I've diagnosed with some fractured ribs...holy crapola, couldn't have come at a worse time, just started new job, training and get ready for new bambino so supposed to decorating as well.

I'm booked for Manchester cycle (9weeks) and Ride London in August. Looking like off the bike for another few weeks, walking far is giving pain and my breathing is laboured and painful... How long till I can hit up the turbo? Should I defer my rides to next year? Is there anything I can do to feel better?

Am feeling a little down about it, training wasn't going that well and do feel I'm going to miss some good training whilst laid up, also as my off was car related I'm thinking I need to get back on the horse so to speak and to it before I get freaked out about riding on roads.....

A bit confused and some nice tablets making me have mellow thoughts, sorry for rant, any help advice much appreciated

I know how you feel, although I am now 12 weeks post injury (and surgery). I've probably only ridden 300 miles outside this year. I am more nervous on the roads than I expected, flinch every time a car overtakes which around here is pretty often!

The ribs will heal, book a couple of sessions with a physio to get an exercise programme and advice, take it easy. You will need to wait until the ribs have healed until you go outside. Maybe when you go out, go out with someone else for company and support

I too am doing Ride London, it's still 3 months off, I've done 100 miles before and it's not a race, but an experience to enjoy.
The Manchester cycle for you in closer, what are the details? Might be one to postpone or go into it thinking I'll do my best, it doesn't matter if I don't finish

You'll be good. GWS

If I do it I will finish, bit stubborn like that. Thanks for the replies and support. Been walking the streets the past few nights just to get out which has been nice relaxing but sore, but this evening felt better. Taking it easy though, it's just a shame to happen when I've got plans and the suns coming out. I've got 5 weeks till Colin's ride and I'm targeting another two before turbo and a pottle around town on mountain bike, fingers crossed

jarlrmai cool I look out for you, my brothers pacing me I hope the plan was a 2:40-2:50 time I'll post numbers when I get them more the merrier as far as I'm concerned

You can quite hapily cycle on broken ribs no problemo.

Busted mine chasing the kids round a pool on holiday (there is a reason they say don't run). Back home a week later, and back on the bike commuting to work. Yes it hurt, but I was OK if I didn't honk the bikes uphil and sat down. Took 6 weeks for the bad pain to go, but a fair few months to settle.

Stop being a softie.

First day back in work on crutches after coming off on Easter sunday on the Herts Easter Hunt Sportive. Fractured Pelvis being the result. Extremely painful and very gutting as i had a C2C ride planned for June 18/19th with friends. No chance of being fit enough to tackle that now though. Had to postpone it until September now. Pain has eased considerably as the swelling in my hip and back has reduced but still need the crutches for a minimum of another 2 weeks apparently. Really missing the bike, was supposed to be riding in the EHC 50 last weekend and had to settle for spectating instead..... very fustrating. Think i will give the Turbo a go for a few weeks before climbing back on the bike for real though.

Bugger, hope your feeling better, I took a gingerly ride on BH Monday managed 44 miles with a big kick at the end, rough road and filling the lungs hurt, but it's been getting better. I've walked a lot at night just to get out and except for a little ache I think I'm on the mend ( fingers crossed ) hope your feeling better though soon fella

THanks for your concern and well done Nick that sounds like you are well on the way back. Making slow progress here, (feels slow anyway).... took some very tentative steps today without crutches but will continue to use them until i get my xray done tomorrow hopefully confirming the bone has knitted/mended. Hopefully be walking unaided next week and then a few easy miles on the turbo a week or so later.... Watching everyone coming off in the rain at the Giro yesterday did send a shiver down my spine though, so much so that my wife noticed me physically wincing whilst watching them hit the tarmac... they all got back up and got on with it though so she probably thinks i'm a right old malingering wuss now ! ^_^

I cracked my rib a few years ago thanks to a comedy fall (foot slipped off the pedal and jammed the front wheel!!). You'll probably find that the pain begins to subside over the next week or two. Like @fossyant, I kept on cycling (got back on the bike straight afterwards, though the ibuprofen I took probably helped there!). You just need to take things easy for 3-4 weeks, that's all. There's no reason why you won't be able to do the Manchester ride: your ribs should have healed by then so you'll be able to laugh without the pain!

That's, what, four weeks after breaking it? It can take as much as another couple of months before the bones reach maximum strength. It's worth asking the consultant over how much you can do: it seems quite early to be doing much load bearing on your hip as yet so I'd stick with the crutches for the moment.
