hi guys, i took the wheel, burs and new hub kit to Halfords, fingers crossed! Also, chain reaction git back to me and say its the free wheel and not the hub that's broken? That doesn't sound right... Anyway, they say it comes under wear and tear nit warranty. Seriously, never buy from these lot.

Nowt wrong with Chain Reaction. Someone buggered up that freehub - AKA Halfords. Nuff said.

The recommended service plan is to stay clear of Halfords. You nearly always get some spotty faced kid, and not a trained mechanic.

ive had a lot of problems with chainreation - very shoddy service. Took nearly 2 months to replace a backwheel that was warped due to not being trued. They put a new rim on it eventually, but with a presta valve hole, so i now have a bike with 2 diff inner tubes front n back. They took forever to respond to anything, forever to refund anything, and i had to re explain their errors over and over again. Halfords are shite too, but at least I can rock on in there and tell them they are rubbish when they are.

Never mind all that! Have you been in touch with Madison to see if they can supply the freehub that will fix your existing wheel? Some people mistakenly call a freehub the free wheel but it isn't. The hub is the alloy body that the spokes are laced to. The freehub is bolted to the hub body to allow the cogs/gears to spin. On older wheels the freehub and cogs are a single unit that screws onto the hub body and is called a freewheel.

Hope this helps. Track down a replacement freehub (the splined bit) and your wheel will be good to go.

It is fortunate you have the part number for the new free hub, some manufacturers use a generic free hub with no model markings at all. Get the remaining part of the old free hub off with a suitable Allen key, whack a new free hub on and enjoy riding again.

Thanks, Madison did have the part, but my local shop wanted £30 to order it!. So, the wheel is being rebuilt around an all new hub that fits (a Diore one). Should be done in a few days, Halfords have had a talking to and if they don't do it well there will be trouble. Its a shame, around my area its a choice of small very elitist/over priced places or the big Halfords/Evans . There is a Cube dealer - but he was the pricey chap.

hi there, just for the future, how much for the new one?

It'll be no good to you unless you have the same freehub on your new hub.
