my chain snapped yesterday and jammed in the rear cassette and the result was very much like being thrown over the top of the handlebars

I suspect it is driving down onto the pedal, the pedal doesnt move so all the force is upwards and because you arent expecting it... over you go

Some interesting theories...

I think he is ok (I'm about 500 miles away atm). He wasn't wearing the helmet (which I lent him!) and had a nasty bump on the head above his eye, but sounds like its not too serious.

He had been borowing the bike for about 2 months, his got stolen and he got the insurance money from it but couldn't be bothered to go buy a new one - which kind of anoyed me lol. I'm not sure if he is going to blame me or my bike lol :/

"came to a small incline, i was stood up trying to get some speed up the hill...
chain snaps, momentum keeps me going forward, my head hits the road."

He was going up hill!!

My chain sort of split last night, one of the outer links came away from the roller pin, must have caught in the front mech as that needed repairing too, so in effect it jammed nothing happen other than the bike wouldnt go anywhere so had to go home and fix it, I think I need a new front mech. Just set of from the mini roundabout about near home.

If he was using the bike it's up to him to keep it road worthy. he had it for a while so should have done a little maintenance.

I would make him pay for damage to the bike, the daft tit!

I've had similar on a fixed. Sudden deceleration as back wheel locks

He was waiting at traffic lights, they changed so he stood up on the bike to get ahead of traffic then the chain broke and he went over the handle bars... So he wasn't moving much I guess? More like he was leaning forwards and suddenly "solid platform" (as you mentioned, with pedal he was standing on gave-way. I'd imagine you would just kind of whack your arse on the seat though if that happened...

This happened to me just yesterday - chain slipped off and jammed whilst I was standing up pulling onto a main road. Had to wheel to the side and tug at the chain for a while to free it - painful and embarrassing.

If he's been borrowing it for 2 months then he probably should have been keeping an eye on its upkeep or asked you to: tyres, brakes, chain etc... would be different I think if you just lent it to him for one ride.

I had a 10 speed chain snap once, but it was own fault for re-connecting it with the same pin I took out

I just came to a gradual stop, reconnected it with the missing link I should have used in the first place and went on my way.

At no point did I feel like I was even about to go near the bars, let alone over them.

I've had a chain snap when pulling away from lights - and whacked myself quite hard on the handlebars, almost going over. If you are leaning forward and pressing heavily on the pedal for a quick getaway when the chain goes, then you are thrown forwards, so I can easily see why somebody would go over the bar.
