Not sure about the British championships 'becoming' devalued - big names not showing up is nothing new. ICBW but I think the Belgians have a rule that all eligible pros have to race the national championships.

Does the national champion automatically get selected for the world championships? If not they should do.

Greipel won the German road race with Kittel coming in third behind The New Kittel, Max Walscheid. Don't know if that's any kind of indication of form ahead of the Tour (neither of them did much at the Ster ZLM Toer either, did they?), but it's a good psychological blow for Greipel.

Shame Walscheid won't be at the Tour.

The winners of the nationals are often skewed by whoever has a 'team' with him. A lot of decent riders are completely isolated and stand no chance.
The paucity of opposition in some countries means that it's an easier win for some than others. Having said that, those 'easy' winners would be the national selection for the Worlds anyway.

GB wise, no, although in most cases they would. Nevertheless there are situations where legitimately they may not.

Why? There are cases when the best riders don't ride, for various reasons. Automatic selection takes any discretion away (maybe not a good team rider, the National format encourages individual riding) which is never good.
