I think breaking it down into regions is a good idea, I would like to see a Yorkshire or a North Yorkshire one.

I can also see a lot of people wouldnt even bother putting in miles as the same people always seem to dominate the top spots which is ok and I am not begrudging them that. The only problem is us lesser mortals could never get that sort of mileage, I for one have a business to run which means I work long hours and couldnt possibly get out on my bike for those sort of hours so it can seem like a bit of a waste of time for some people which is a shame.

Sorry Scoosh, ignore me. I realize now you can join more than one team. So yes, I think it is a good idea.

Ignore Crackle ? Impossible !

You are quite right, though, it appears that you can be in 2 teams but your miles can only be recorded in 1. So if I put my miles in CC Ecosse, they are removed from (the main) CC, which is a pity, as I would like to compare myself with the full CC team yet get CC Ecosse doing well in the inter-team 'competition' - if that makes sense

I think what Garz said is what we want ... but I don't speak computer programme

This would seem to be a bigger task than is necessary. It would make more sense to leave the cyclogs as it is and have a sub-parsing site that collates all the cyclogs data (it will be a day or two behind the live system) and within the CC team it calculates this into the 'regional' system that you want to compete with.

Yes, ask the site owners to organise teams along cyclechat.midlands, cyclechat.scotland etc lines. Then if I am part of and enter my rides against cyclechat.midlands my rides will be counted twice, once for cyclechat and once for cyclechat.midlands.

The problem with this of course is that all ride distances would be counted twice, which would mess up the ranking tables. cyclechat and all its derivatives would occupy all of the top ten or whatever places. I think the other teams who use the site might have something to say about that. Should be easy to code it out so that only the main cyclechat result is captured on the rankings page, but the breakdown is made visible separately.

I know they have problems with storage space, which I think would be exacerbated by creating mutliple teams for each rider. This way above doesn't [with my very limited knowledge of database admin] need an increase in database size, just a change to the database team naming structure.

But that is just what I think we need to break up/down  ! The main CycleChat result is so far ahead of everyone else, it's not a lot of fun for them.

I'm actually thinking of something along the opposite lines, where the 'breakdown teams' (CC Ecosse, CC Northern, CC Etranger etc) feature on the Rankings page but we all still appear together on a Team CycleChat page. Sorry if it is not too clear .

I have e-mailed the Admin to ask about it.

but but but.... what if someone didn't want to belong to Team CycleChat and just, say, CC Ecosse?

Looks like I misunderstood, or I misunderstood what Garz said in your quote earlier.

Cycle Chat need to manage their own site for this to work (webspace, software etc). It's not majorly hard but would require some effort from people who are used to doing this or at school and know how to. It was years since I done my degree in computer science so im well out of the loop (rusty).

Each night the CC setup would pull off the daily figures and manipulate the data. You could then do as people are requesting which is categorising data into sub-teams. This is the leymans terms of how its done, but very do-able.

We should remember the Cyclogs website relies on voluntary contributions. I hope the people calling for technical advances on the site have contributed financially to the site admin.

I think it's time to organise a conference call with the developers to discuss our requirements and put some timelines in place

FWIW, I think the only realistic way we can do this is by creating a site that's totally independant of Cyclogs (as has been already suggested) and for each of the proposed regional teams to allocate a couple of administrators, who would be responsible for updating the data on a daily or weekly basis. Not sure how many folk would be up for such a task though. The "more trouble than it's worth" factor will come into play hugely. I for one spend a fair proportion of my day staring at spreadsheets and have no inclination to do more of the same during free time.

This is not as easy as it seems, is it

My view is ..Don't mess with Cyclogs, I have been using it for 4 years, find it user-friendly and see no need for change. I tried another mileage logging site(Bikejournal I think) found it hopelessly complex to use and went back to Cyclogs.
