I trained in brazing with oxy hydrogen and qualified as a pipe welder for a while.
You do need to know the difference between brazing and welding though.
Brazing is where you heat up two metals and melt a filler (brass) rod into the joint. The parent metals do not melt, they just get hot. It is a higher temperature version of soldering if you have ever done that before in plumbing or electronics. A good and suitable flux will be needed to prevent the parent metals from oxidising in the heat.
Welding is where you melt the two parent metals together. A higher temperature is needed to do this and also more care as you don't want to melt away the metal you want to join.
With gas welding I wouldn't use a coat hanger as it is usually coated, either zinc or other stuff that will give off fumes. If you were stuck and had no filler rod it would be better to either weld without (it is possible) or to use a thin strip of the off cut from the same parent metal.
If you wanted to do some welding it is always worth looking at your local technical colleges as they would be enroling soon. An evening class in welding is really useful and usually cover MIG, TIG, MMA (arc/stick) and gas welding as well as gas cutting, bending and brazing. They will show you how to weld different types of steel and aluminium and also brazing steel and sometimes silver soldering brass.
