I still use old LX cantis on my tourer, and they've been able to stop it fully loaded from nearly 50mph with no problems.

I'm a little uncomfortable with stopping distances over a mile though. ;)

Seriously, The cantis on my other half's bike seem fine. Mine are just rubbish, whatever the blocks and whatever the rims. And I do know how to adjust them and drop the arms for leverage an' all that before everyone starts on at me.

In fact, it's rare I seek advice but I did take them to someone I rate highly as a mechanic (and who is a top cycle restorer) and he had no luck either. SO there we are. (My) Cantis are rubbish!

*End of rant*

I thought the OP wanted to upgrade an old MTB style bike.........or am I missing something?
I would agree that Maguras are not for a cross bike !
