hello guys,

Got a giant defy 1 2013 with tektro brakes.

Bought a set of 105 brakes this week online and getting delivered for the weekend, wondering if anyone knows what tools required to fit them?

Need to make sure i bring the right tools home from work tomorrrow and cant have a look at the brakes to see what i need?

Guessing you will just need a set of Allen keys and a pair of pliers to help pull the cable tight.

Don't forget to use the pliers for crimping the cable nipple (which you should have otherwise you'll end up with a frayed cable.) Course, you could go hardcore and solder the cable end......

How do you solder stainless steel cables? I've tried it and can never get the solder to penetrate, even using plumbers' flux.

I replaced some old sidepull brakes with new Tiagra last weekend - 3, 4 and 5mm allen keys and a pair of pliers was all I needed. I think some brake levers benefit from a 2mm allen key as well.

It would have been handy to have some proper cable cutters but I seem to have, er, misplaced mine...

Another way to stop a cable fraying at the end if you don't have a nipple or solder, is to use a blob of superglue.

Honestly, I've never had a problem (maybe the old flux I have is the difference?). The biggest problem I've had (and the primary reason I don't do this unless I haven't got any cable nipples) is that the cable end always ends up being slightly wider in diameter -causing a problem if you want to replace the cable housing. I haven't found the skill to solder so little that the increase in diameter is negligible! I find it to be much better using the "proper" cable nipples.
