Hi all,

So fettling my bike today I see that the cap has come off the end of the rear brake cable and a couple of the strands have frayed. No sign of damage to the outer housing so I'm thinking it's a simple enough job, pull cable out, gently push replacement back in.

Right ? How do you stop the new cable fraying as its being pushed through? Assume I need to buy the right kind of cable - the brake levers are SRAM RED. I'll take the old cable out and take it to the LBS to make sure.

If I don't know what I'm doing should I just get the LBS to replace it ?

twist the strands back together and crimp another end cap on - job done. No need to remove anything or change anything.

The problem was getting the cable with frayed end back through the hole in the bolt. I'll have another go.

Can you snip off just the frayed bit with some decent quality wire cutters? Then you will have a nice neat end on the wire which you can put a new cap on.

not sure what bolt you are talking about....?
The brakes are Tektro cantilevers. The cable passes through a hole in a bolt which secures it to the brakes on either side.

I carefully snipped off the frayed part, as much as I could and still reach the bolt. I got it fixed up for now, but it frayed going through the bolt. I'll get another cable to replace.
