At least brake blocks are fairly cheap and easy to replace. Disc pads are as well but cost more than blocks.

Another vote for Koolstops: after 720km in the Pyrenees still going strong.

I like Swissstop greens for longevity and stopping power. Done over 1000 winter miles with them and they are still going strong.

The weight of the rider would have a significant effect i would have thought, which reminds me i must check my pads
