The problem is that lots of textured ceilings contain asbestos.
I wasn’t aware of this and sanded one down 20 years ago. Before getting it skimmed.
You have to be careful as you are encapsulating it.
No need to sand it...PVA and skim it,if it has too many high spots you can always overboard and skim,or a coat of Bonding first,done plenty of them.

You can skim over easily enough without sanding first, this guy gives a tutorial on how to do it. I quite like his videos, somewhat therapeutic to watch and useful as I have a house with a half dozen things needing fixing or replastering at any one time!

This may seem a bit extreme to many on here but because of electrical cables running down the wall next to the boiler I couldn't box mine in conventionally by screwing it to the wall.

So instead, I took the floor boards up on the landing above and attached it with nuts and bolts onto hidden battens inside the boxing in.
