I had a horrible clicking noise that was driving me mad for a week or so. Turned out that the rear derailleur had twisted slightly on the tube and the crank arm was ever so slightly touching it as it went past. I changed and/or regreased half the bike before working that one out.

That's either a really long cage rear derailleur, or you mean the front one.

My hard to locate sound on a bike story: I had this clinking sound, once every pedal revolution. I was about to go down the "take everything apart, grease and refit" route, when I realised it was caused by a handful of small change in the pocket of my "cargo" shorts.

My best one was many years ago and It was a rattle, puzzled me for several weeks till I realised it only happened when I was in short sleeves, once I had worked that out it was easy to track down, it was my metal watch strap rattling against the bars, the bike had chopped and flopped bars on it. Another one was a creak on my Kilmeston that sounded exactly like a creaking crank, when I tracked it down the culprit it turned out to be a loose brake lever, half a turn on the bolt and silence. I dislike having to try and track down odd noises on a bike, these days I tend to blitz the usual suspects then see if that kills of the noise.
