I had this horrendous noise in my bottom bracket (a Shimano Tiagra 4700 Bottom Bracket) so I replaced it with a new one last night and... the noise is more or less the same.

The crank is on nicely and I am not aware of any other issues.

Urgggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Possibly pedals. Also make sure the BB is nice and tight in the shell, and make sure it's greased up.

When does the noise occur ?

I did not grease the crank arm this time - I will take it out and give it lashings. The sides are nice and tight for sure.
If all it needed was grease I could have saved myself money and not bought a new one - hey ho.

Dependant on the BB model, I've found quite a variation in tolerances of fit, on certain BB's. One has fitted snugly, the following ( same type ) BB has been a bit smaller, and the subsequent one a bit larger, in the same frame. The smaller one still fitted, but it was a bit of a mare to keep it true, and fitted tightly, the bigger one needed some effort from the press, to get it in. I've not had the same issue with screw in BB's that I've had with press fit.

I've also just changed my BB due to clicking noise when pedalling, things are much smoother now (it was cream crackered) but still a clicking noise
It's definitely not the pedals so had a look at the rear bearings/cups/cones and freewheel...the bearings do have very slight pitting and are discoloured so maybe under load they're causing the clicking. I've obtained a new axle assembly and freewheel and will be fitting them tonight .. I'll let you know how I get on.

Chain ring bolts?
Tight skewers on the rear drop outs?
Pedals?
Shoes?
Bars/headset?

All worth considering.

My bottom bracket replacement turned into chain ring bolt replacements, turned into a second bottom bracket replacement, turned into an entire chaining set and crank arm replacement, before the justifiably smug chap at my lbs greased the cam on my rear skewer and solved a horrendous cyclical creak.

I will swap my rear wheel over and see if it persists, then at least I can rule out my rear wheel

I have read here many posts where people have replaced various parts thinking it causes the noise and then realise that noise persists.
In the past I have done the same and learned my lesson.
Now when presented with a noise, it becomes a weekend project of couple of hours in isolating the noise.
Actually I quite enjoy that.

The Tiagra bottom-bracket, in my (blue) Ribble requires replacing, but then again it is almost 3years old

Conversely, there's no noise, but plenty of play
With the cranks held at 08:10, viewed from the chainring side, there's about 3mm of play at the crank ends
Definately worn out then!

I did think about putting an Ultegra in instead, as they're not that dear
(a work-colleague has a Hope headset in his Surley work-bike, & may also put a Hope in the BB, but that frame is worth a lot more than my Ribble)

I hear you all. I will borrow my 10 year old son to help me locate the issue!

I have had some clicking from BB area recently and found it was the pedals, removed them, greased the threads and refitted and now have silence
