we are talking about surface rust on the taper where water gets trapped out of sight. It is the dry surface of the aluminium crank against the dry axle taper that causes the squeaking when there is a minute bit of play. Applying a smear of grease to the axle taper will prevent surface rust forming on the axle taper and the surface of the aluminium from oxidising.
If there is any play or squeaking the crank is loose, if the crank is installed correctly there's no possibility of the taper surfaces oxidising. And therefore no need for grease. Shirley?

you say that but some of the cheaper cranks do not have good quality castings. The taper hole in some cranks is cast not machined therfore there are parts that do not make good contact with the axle tapers which are a precision finish.

Look inside any aluminium crank which fits square taper axles and you'll see what I am talking about.

Those areas with poor contact can trap water and cause rust and oxidation.

If the cranks aren't tightened properly when new they gradually wear oval and squeak and creak . No amount of tightening will cure this if left too long. I have used a square edge file to dress the aluminium taper hole but its a bit hit and miss.

Two different things;

(1) Crank tightness.
Greasing the taper is not a solution for a creaky crank.

(2) Oxidisation between the BB axle and crank.
You seem to be suggesting that your grease fills up any voids between the two components but I just don't think oxidisation is an issue. In all my years in bike workshops I've never greased a taper and I've never encountered a problem with corrosion in this area on my or anyone else's bike. So I remain unconvinced.

(3) Spanders is lisdexic

well you are taking this way off topic . I'm going to agree to disagree with you. The fact that you have not experienced something is immaterial, others clearly have .
I for one, just recently and the other poster who said the same thing.

Judging by the appalling level of untrained unqualified 'mechanics' workmanship I have experienced in Lbs over the past 40 years I shouldn't have thought it was something to crow about frankly:laugh:

well I still put a smear of grease on my bottom brackets and not had any problems. and yes, from my experiense they do rust but at worst it is just a light covering on the surface, I doubt the grease would offer that much protection.

when I make a suggestion or recommendation it is based upon my personal experience and understanding .I assume it is the same for other posters.

When someone else posts a contrary or alternative suggestion I don't immediately attack that other posters view and state that because it differs from my own they must be wrong.

Why is it that some posters apparently cannot permit another member to have a differant viewpoint without immediately attacking that viewpoint.?

If you are satisified that your view is sound why would you feel the need to challenge another member for having different view ?

Maybe some people just like being argumentative and confrontational ;)

I'm really unhappy that you feel under siege peanut and sorry if my posts come across as argumentative and confrontational, that certainly wasn't my intention. I was rather enjoying the debate and hoping that we might eventually come to some kind of mutually acceptable compromise where we are both able to shake hands and agree that I was right all along!:biggrin:

Joking! Actually to be perfectly honest I wish to God that someone had greased the taper on my latest aquisition before assembling it because I've stripped the thread trying to pull the bastard off.
