Just started to take a bottle of water with me on rides. At the moment I am just cleaning it with good old Fairy liquid.
Is this ok? Sorry for asking such a boring question!

Yeah that's fine as long as you rinse thoroughly. Myself... I just rinse out with clean water and then it goes in the cupboard...

I rinse daily and then wash in hot soapy water once a week, but rinse in fresh water afterwards before leaving to air dry.

Never wash bottle though

I take it you mean a 'bidon' and not just a disposable spring water bottle re-filled from the tap.

Washing up should be ok provided you pay attention to the lid/spout and make sure it's properly dry. However we find using homebrew steriliser (or well diluted Milton) from time to time helps ensure they stay wholesome and removes any taint from the squash my son prefers over plain water.

Others will point out the risk of splatter from animal faeces on the road and suggest that only boiling the bottles daily is enough.

I make sure that I give them a good rinse (inside and out) after every use and from time to time I sterilise them with diluted bleach (which I then thoroughly rinse out). I then invert them without the lids on to let them dry.

Another point which some people neglect ... I use SIS bottles (bidons) and have discovered that carbo drink residues can fester inside the 'stopper'. If you hold the black stopper firmly in your teeth, you can pull it out and clean it properly. The stoppers are quite easy to push back in if you align them properly. The first time I did this, I was pretty shocked at how much black gunge was hiding in there!

I'd just give it a soak with some washing up liquid or throw it in the dishwasher when you use it. Juice is sticky so it's never really clean unless you use proper hot water and soap and leave it to soak - that's my opinion anyway. I wouldn't use disinfectant or anything like that unless you got dog crap on it or any other grim sticky substances!

I have about a dozen bottles or more in 750ml and 500ml sizes and use them in rotation and various combinations depending on how long I will be riding for, soon as they get grimy time to change, and those that I am not using I just fill with water after giving a good clean with soapy water and drop in half a sterilising tablet from Wilko's (own brand) and leave to stand till needed. When emptied and given a swill out they smell fresh and no plastic smells etc

I never knew bike water bottles were called 'bidons'. You learn something new every day... When I glanced at this thread on my phone I thought people were advocating washing them out in the bidet! Ewww!
I personally use, erm, SIS 'bidons' and just wash them with hot soapy water, rinse well and allow to dry. Not saying that's best but I've not been ill through it and I usually have SIS electrolyte in there in summer, so not just water.

My Camelbak also gets filled with juice if I'm off-roading. This then gets rinsed out afterwards with plain water and kept in the freezer, which seems to be good at preventing nasties from forming inside.

I don't even want to think of animal poop on my bidet or bidon or indeed anywhere.
